Quinquagesima. By 4am only Judith, Kathryn and I are conscious. But when we decided to call it a day I realised with horror that my jacket and keys are locked in Tony's car. We drove to Kirkstall for sausages and chips and pots of hot coffee at an unpleasant transport cafe which, by coincidence, is closing down today. Listen to Elvis Presley on the juke box and debate whether we're sane, or not.

Tony.
On leaving the 'restaurant' we were accosted by two or three police officers in cars, who question us about a shooting which had just occurred in Leeds City Station. Kathryn turned to me and said: "What have you done with the gun, Michael?" This did not amuse the officers.
Frankenstein's monster.
Back to Judith's serenaded by the clanging of church bells and the singing of obnoxious bird-life. To make matters worse Kathryn has an elephant in her mini which plays the drums and makes one hell of a rumpus when wound up. A clockwork elephant. Judith dumps us in her dining room and then slips into a coma on the carpet. I sit moaning and groaning trying to keep Kathryn awake and for her to amuse me. Silly bugger aren't I? By 8am Kathryn decided that Tony would be on the move and so she drove me down to WH Smith's. Tony was indeed up. But what a nauseating sight! Frankenstein could not have looked worse, in fact Mrs Shelley's creation is angelic in comparison. I sit at Tony's breakfast table in dark spectacles watching him pace up and down with a strange look in his eyes. ______.

Home for 9am and immediately retire to bed until 12 o'clock. Tony takes me to the YP at 5 o'clock in the snow. Yes, snow. By 10pm I'm just about unconscious with exhaustion.

Sunday February 29, 1976

Quinquagesima. It's the first time that February 29 has fallen on a Sunday since 1948, and it won't fall again on the Sabbath until 2004. Aren't I a walking encyclopaedia then? If you think I'm going to divulge just where I found this item of information you'll have one Hell of a wait because I'm not going to tell you until 2004. See you all then.

A nice day and John and I go for a drive in the spitfire with the roof off to Burley-in-Wharfedale. We get Mum a plant from a garden centre and heading home for lunch we see Carole at the bus stop waiting for the bus to come up to ours. John goes down to pick her up whilst I have lunch and she sits in the dining room with great expectations of going for a walk afterwards. Maria comes round with Prinny (spaniel) and she chats with Mum about the flowers. I can't believe my eyes when I look at Maria. She's getting enormous, and the heir to the Rhodes Empire isn't due until September.

Carole and I walk round Tranmere and call on Molly. She talks for hours and we don't get out until after 4 when it starts to rain.

Dad and John are decorating Maria's bedroom and I almost feel sorry for them both as they peep at us from the Georgian-style windows of 14, Ridgeway.

Quinquagesima. Up at a decent time. Can't quite remember the exact hour, but it was well before lunch. See in the Sunday Express that the Queen has sprained her shoulder while chopping wood, and received treatment for it at a London hair salon. I realise that the Royal Family are in a poor state at the moment, what with scrapping those plans for rebuilding Sandringham. She's seen in the same hat and coat on different occasions over a five or six year period, but never did I imagine that the day would dawn when Her Majesty would be compelled for financial reasons to do her own wood-chopping. Mum says that she thought Auntie Hilda was the only woman alive adept at chopping wood, but evidently all the top people do it now.

Out with John, Andy, Mr Mather and Chris, who is really miserable. Oh, musn't forget Carol S and Miss Dibb too. No CB. Move on to the Station in Yeadon after the Hare & Hounds. John and I go on to Harry Ramsden's for the things people normally go to Harry Ramsden's for, and after devouring them in the car we return home. Too hot to sleep and lay awake for hours thinking of all things under the Sun. Hell, I've missed out the most important thing.

At 11 o'clock tonight John's unnamed girlfriend (Naomi Downing)  paid him a visit! She sat in a drunken heap in the lounge & he promised to go out with her tomorrow - me being the chaperone of course.

Quinquagesima. Old Chinese proverb says: remember three words which will always ensure you are never without money - 'Stick 'em up!'

Sunday March 4, 1973

Quinquagesima. Dad woke me up at 10.30 whilst making Mum her morning cup of tea, but I went back to bed for another hour. Got up at 11.30 to a fashion parade of girls dresses which Muriel Rawnsley had brought round from her Grattan's catalogue orders. Lynn and Sue are certainly preparing for Italy. Went upstairs to dress. Mum was making lunch and smell of roast chicken drifted around the house.

Toffer gave me £4 last night, an extra 50p - for commendable service on Friday night. I was most chuffed. However the extra 50p will not be put to use by me because Lynn celebrates her 15th birthday on Tuesday and I have promised to put 50p in the birthday kitty. Tuesday will also be a very important day politically because Mr Barber, the Chancellor of the Exchequer presents his Budget to parliament in good time for the introduction of VAT on April 1. The Budget is usually near my birthday.

After a superb lunch we all went into the lounge and watched TV. I had a bath - soaked for an hour - and then came downstairs to press my trousers for tonights liaison at the Emmotts.

Tea was upon is once again and I ate it whilst listening to Tom Brown's Top 60 show on the radio. At 7.30 I headed down to the bus stop and was most surprised to see that all the broken windows had been replaced. Got the 8 o'clock 55 and was at the Emmotts by 8.25. June and Janet and June's twin sister Susan were waiting inside. I had quite forgotten what Susan Bottomley looked like. A pleasant evening together. Chris, Christine, Andy and Linda Smith came up at about 10 and then Keith Harrison arrived. Within 20 minutes we had Susan B and Keith "off together". June and I then left them alone and we walked down to the bottom road. June said that Susan hated Keith - having been out with him before. We sat on the seat waiting for the damnable bus. At about 10.55 Chris and Andy and girlfriends came marching past - Chris was all cheesy grins. Susan and Keith followed. They didn't half look funny together. But Susan is such a nice girl, and if I had never met June then she would have made an admirable substitute.
Ah but nobody can replace June.

June's 33 bus came at 11. We bade farewell. Chris was also on board. Keith was over the moon! He's such a fan of Sue Bottomley. Keith and I walked into Horsforth (?) with Dave Pearson, a black chap. I continued to walk home realising I'd missed the last bus. It only took 30 minutes. Arrived home at 11.45. Mum and Dad had just gone to bed. I had some supper and went to bed at 12.20. A delightful evening.
