Friday May 4, 1973

Terrible weather. Rain and icy blasts. One would hardly think that it is May.

Take Sue to the dentist and sit in the waiting room reading an old magazine featuring Princess Anne and Lieutenant Mark Phillips. The insinuations that it might be an Easter engagement seem very silly now, to say the least. But, just because the TV and papers stop publicising Pcss. Anne and Lieut. Phillips's every move doesn't mean to say that the romance is over. It seems to me that the couple are being put through the traditional 24-month separation, which the Duke of Kent and many other royals had to go through. An endurance test as it were.

Mr Ayling doesn't arrive for the double lesson this morning. We all go instead to the common room and make some attempt to read Harvey. June and I sit together at break. She does an exam at 1.30. At 2.40 Dave and I rush out of school, along with Denny, MM, Chris, Tim, Liz, and many lower 6th scum. What we get up to when Groves isn't around! I go to Rawdon library until nearly 4 o'clock. Go back and see June. We walk to the bus stop together - it's raining hard.

Go to the CW - quite busy.

Sunday March 18, 1973

2nd in Lent. Awoke to the sound of all the people on Tranmere mowing lawns and pruning back those sprouting roses. It was 12.30 and the morning was gone. A beautiful sunny day. Went down for bacon and eggs and mushrooms. Absolutely delicious. After a quick chase around the garden full of "a host of golden daffodils" I took up the sunday newspapers. Tragedy. Mark Phillips has denied the rumours of his romance with Princess Anne. She denied the rumours 2 weeks ago. Is it curtains for the Christmas wedding? Yes, it seems as though at Easter engagement is now dashed on the rocks of disaster. Such a pity. Watched an old fashioned film on the afternoon film matinee spot. Then took to the bathroom for 40 minutes emerging feeling greatly refreshed and healthy. After tea Dave phoned and offered me a lift to the Emmotts in his car. What a tremendous feeling it was! Fancy, Dave being able to drive! Mum and Dad went out about 7.30. Dave called for me at 7.45. He drove away perfectly. We arrived at the Emmotts at 8. June was late and didn't arrive until 8.40. I sat in the bus shelter wearing my new bags feeling very miserable until her arrival. We stayed at the Emmotts until 9.30, when Dave gave June and I and Martin V-B a lift to The Drop in Guiseley - not a very nice place and much too modern for my taste. June wasn't keen either. On the whole it was a beautifully pleasant evening. Dave gave June a lift home to Horsforth dropping Martin V-B off at Rawdon Crematorium - rather appropriate. He dropped me off at my door at 11. Such a good day it's been. --==--

Susan woke me up at 7.45. For the first hour I felt completely dead to the world - and went through breakfast in a complete daze - much to Mum's annoyance. Went down on 8.30 bus. Christine B and I had our usual morning gossip. Also had a chat with Denise for the first time in about a month. The lovely June arrived at about 9.45 - alas, she and Linda were in silly moods for the greater part of the day. For the first two lessons I revised British politics 1945-51 - for the test at 11.45. The test itself was perfect -well, the first bit was. It said: " a. Account for the Labour victory of 1945, and, b. the Labour defeat of 1951." I woffled on for three quarters of an hour - Mrs Lane will no doubt find space to tear it to bits in tomorrow's lesson. June was still off at lunch - she still is cool towards me.

Princess Anne and Lieut. Phillips are "jumping" at the Duke of Beaufort's pad at Badminton. Not sexually of course, but equestrian jumping.

June and I are back on speaking terms by 2.30. She went off for lessons leaving me alone with Louise and Martin V-B. Later, Dave, Christine Chid, Louise and I messed about in the common room until nearly 4. I did manage to fill in my college application forms and get them posted.

Chris was disturbed when he heard I'd been acting the fool with Louise. But he pulled round when he mentioned that Louise had gone in for the young farmers' Dairy Queen Contest - I made the quip: "Cow of the Year 1973" - we all had a good laugh.

June and I both agreed today that we spend far too much time pulling people to bits over one thing or another. It's either Janet Roots, Louise or some unsuspecting fellow scholar - and our derogatgory comments are only growing worse with the passing days. Poor Janet is said to be really upset about what I have said of her in recent weeks - I should have a guilty conscience. I must now make a solemn promise that never again will I say anything nasty about ____ because really she is a nice natured girl. In fact, if it was not for her ugly face I could quite fancy her.

June accompanied me to the bus stop at 4.30 where we stood hand in hand until the dreaded No. 55 bus came. Louise and Denise were with us. Before we parted June promised not to fall out with me tomorrow.

Saturday February 3, 1973

Susan woke me at noon. The television was at full volume. I made Mum and Dad a cup of tea and when I walked in their bedroom I was momentarily stunned. I had forgotten Mum had changed her hair colour, and the sight of an auburn haired doll in the bed with Dad was something to behold. After lunch of "winter salad" I collapsed in front of the TV.
The paper says that Princess Anne and Mark Phillips are to have an Easter engagement. I doubt very much whether it will be so. Royal marriages usually occur following a very long relationship with a separation endurance test thrown in for good measure. After all, Princess Alexandra and Angus Ogilvy, and the Duke of Kent and Katharine Worsley - were all subject to several years separation. Is it not therefor a surprise that Lieutenant Phillips is being sent to Germany with his regiment until 1975. The Princess however, seems to be a headstrong girl and I doubt whether she'd allow the Queen and Prince Philip to dictate to her.
Things didn't half drag at the CW. Time seemed to stand still until 11.30. But it was very busy. Sue told Pauline that she was being stupid having only the one boyfriend at her age. I quite agree. It's wrong to be tied down with someone at only 16. After this lecture Pauline began chatting me up and making eyes at me. I am unable to fancy her. She is totally sexless, and she talks far too much. Sue found P's attitude most amusing. She kept telling Toffer that Pauline was doing her best to chat me up. June was never out of my thoughts all evening.
Arrived home at 1.30. Supper of cheese and wine, retiring to bed one hour later.
I intend putting £2 from my wage into the Post Office on Monday morning, leaving me with £1.50 on which to go wild with tomorrow. I will most likely need a loan for next week.

Wednesday January 31, 1973

Got up at 8 this morning. Arrived at school at 9.20. I spent the morning waiting for an interview with Mr Gaunt, the careers bod. I finally saw him at 11.25. After 35 minutes we had sorted something out about going into the retail business - not a very good alternative to teaching. Mr Ayling was in a very good mood in Economics. Had a laugh with Louise and Christine Braithwaite. The 6th form will be back on its feet by tomorrow. Mrs Lane will kill me in the Thursday lesson. I made a soddin' mess of the exam. But one can only say "do ones best" dats what I say. June was in her usual jolly mood. She tries to make me jealous and keeps saying she wants to invite _____to the Emmotts on Sunday. She even tells me she likes him, which cannot be true.
All the newspapers are making a huge fuss over Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.
Groves didn't turn up this afternoon and we had a couple of free lessons to play around in. June was in exams so I amused myself with Louise and Christine. Johnny Hart-Woods was in high spirits. We seem to share the same Monty Python type of humour. He always raises a laugh.
I hear a rumour that Dave is going out with one of the birds from Woolworths. She can't be a very classy dame if she works in that joint.
Came to bed at 11.30. I haven't half written some ridiculous things in this diary.

Monday January 15, 1973

Frustrating day. Denise was in a foul mood. In the morning with Louise we learnt a paragraph from Marshall's "Principles of Economics". She ignored me this afternoon. Chris told June Bottomley that Dave fancies her. I wish June would find the time to fancy me, but she never tells anyone whether she does or not, June told me that Linda West fancies Andy Graham. We all intend revising economics tomorrow. The exam. is Wed. 9.30-11.30am. Phil Raynor was reading "The Sun" this afternoon. Headline "Queen visits Mark's home". Does this mean wedding bells for Princess Anne? The Queen and Mrs Phillips chatting over a cup of tea. Choosing the bridesmaid behind poor Anne's back? It's about time Pcss. Anne was married. At 22 you're getting a bit past it.
Tonight "Big Decision" night. Should I take Denise out?

Wednesday January 3, 1973

Several of the morning newspapers contain stories of a romance between Princess Anne and Mark Phillips. The Sun says they're engaged. Mum says he's a good looking chap and hopes they're in love. I'd prefer HRH to marry some titled chap. We can't have the daughter of the Queen going round calling herself Mrs Phillips. Princess Margaret married a Mr Jones - but HM soon put a stop to that (i.e. Lord Snowdon).
1st day back at school since Dec 19, 1972. Dave, Denise and Chris and I are all going to somebodys party at Dunkeswick. I don't know the girl throwing the party and have never heard of Dunkeswick - supposedly a village near Bramhope or Otley.
We arrived at about 9.30. The venue was a tiny cottage. Excuse me if the writing is horrible but it's now 12.30 and I'm awfully drunk. Several wealthy girls were there, including someone called Debbie, daughter of a millionaire. I drank almost a full bottle of whisky - which accounts for the deterioration of the handwriting. I am in love with Denise.
